Synodontis flavitaeniatus
Also known as: Yellowband Synodontis, Yellow-striped Squeaker
Origin: West Africa (Niger basin)
Synodontis flavitaeniatus is among the more brightly coloured members of the genus, bearing yellow to golden striping along its fins and body sides that contrasts with a darker base coloration. It originates from the Niger River drainage in West Africa, favouring slower sections of the river with silty substrates and abundant submerged woody debris.
In the aquarium it is a moderately easy species to maintain, tolerating a range of soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water conditions. It is primarily nocturnal and benefits from a well-structured setup with adequate hiding places to encourage it to venture out during the day.
Due to its relative scarcity in the trade, specimens should be quarantined carefully and conditioned on a varied diet before being introduced to the main aquarium.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–15, KH 2–8). Tank: 180 L minimum; driftwood, leaf litter and rock caves; low flow and subdued lighting. Feeding: Sinking pellets, catfish wafers, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp; feeds enthusiastically after dark. Breeding: Cave spawner; not documented in home aquaria; rare in trade makes captive breeding a valuable goal. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium community fish; may be displaced by more aggressive cave-dwellers.
