Potamotrygon yepezi
Also known as: Yepez Stingray, Maracaibo River Ray
Origin: Lake Maracaibo drainage, Venezuela
Potamotrygon yepezi is described from the Lake Maracaibo drainage of western Venezuela, an isolated freshwater system separated from the main Amazon-Orinoco complex. This isolation has produced a morphologically distinct species with a pale grey disc carrying clusters of small dark spots. In captivity very little husbandry data exists compared to common species, and keepers are largely working from first principles based on general potamotrygonid care. The species likely tolerates slightly harder and more neutral water than strictly Amazonian relatives. Its rarity in the trade, scientific interest, and unusual biogeography make it a compelling acquisition for experienced stingray keepers willing to invest in proper research and record keeping.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderate (2–12 dGH); zero ammonia/nitrite; precise parameters recommended. Tank: Minimum 450L, fine sand, open base, efficient filtration; water quality logs strongly recommended. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, frozen prawn, mussel; may require live foods initially during acclimatisation. Breeding: Very limited captive breeding records; approach as for comparable potamotrygonids. Compatibility: Specialist setup; best with very large calm fish or alone; minimise stressors.
