Botia almorhae
Also known as: Yoyo Loach, Pakistani Loach, Almora Loach
Origin: South Asia (Pakistan, Nepal, northern India)

The Yoyo Loach (Botia almorhae), also known as the Pakistani Loach or Almora Loach, is a popular and entertaining loach from river systems in Pakistan, Nepal, and northern India. Its common name derives from the intricate pattern of dark spots and connecting lines on its silver body that, particularly in juveniles, resemble the letters Y-O-Y-O in repeated sequence. Adult patterning becomes more irregular and reticulated.
Yoyo Loaches are energetic, active fish with bold and interactive personalities. They are frequently seen chasing each other, playing in current, and investigating every corner of the aquarium. They are particularly effective snail-controllers — they will relentlessly hunt and consume pest snails like bladder and Malaysian trumpet snails, making them a functional choice for planted tanks with snail infestations.
They grow to about 15 cm and require a spacious aquarium with good filtration and open areas for active swimming. Like all Botia loaches, they are social fish that should be kept in groups of 5 or more. In small groups, they can become aggressive toward tankmates; in larger groups, their energy and mild dominance hierarchy is directed within the school.
Yoyo Loaches can produce clicking sounds when excited or feeding — an endearing trait that adds to their charm. They are hardy, adaptable fish suitable for experienced beginners.
Water Parameters: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 5–15. Moderately soft to hard water with good filtration and moderate flow. Clean water is important for their long-term health. Weekly water changes of 25–30%.
Tank Setup: Minimum 150 liters for a group of 5. Provide hiding spots, caves, and driftwood for shelter — Yoyo Loaches love squeezing into tight spaces. Open sandy or fine-gravel areas for swimming and foraging. Good filtration with moderate current. Secure lid — they can jump.
Feeding: Omnivores that accept sinking pellets, sinking wafers, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and will eagerly hunt live snails. Feed sinking foods in the evening. They are voracious snail hunters — do not rely on this alone as their diet source. Supplement with regular direct feeding.
Tankmates: Compatible with most medium-to-large community fish: tetras, barbs, cichlids, and other active species. Avoid very small, fragile fish that may be harassed. Avoid other competing loach species without sufficient space. Keep in groups of 5+ to direct social energy within the group.
Health: Hardy and generally robust. Can be susceptible to ich, particularly with temperature fluctuations. Sensitive to some medications — loaches have no scales on their bodies, making them more sensitive to medication than scaled fish. Use half-dose or loach-safe treatments when medicating.
