Yssichromis argens
Also known as: Silver Victorian Cichlid, Argens Pelagic Cichlid
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Yssichromis argens is a slender, pelagic Victorian haplochromine that inhabits the open water zones of Lake Victoria, a stark contrast to the rock-dwelling majority of Victorian cichlids. Its streamlined, silvery body with yellow-tinged fins reflects adaptations for fast open-water pursuit of prey — primarily small invertebrates and zooplankton. Unlike most Victorian haplochromines, Y. argens exhibits loose schooling tendencies, particularly in juveniles.
In the aquarium, Y. argens benefits from a larger open-water swimming volume than rocky-shore species. It is comparatively peaceful for a Victorian cichlid and can be kept in groups, making it an unusual and interesting addition to a large Victorian community tank. The species is a maternal mouthbrooder.
Care is straightforward for an experienced aquarist, though the species' open-water adaptations mean it needs more swimming room and fewer territorial restrictions than rock-dwelling Pundamilia or Paralabidochromis. Water quality maintenance and a carnivore-biased diet are key to success.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 7.0-8.5, moderately hard; weekly 25% water changes. Tank: 200L minimum; open swimming space essential; minimal rockwork. Feeding: Carnivore diet — frozen invertebrates, small crustaceans; accepts quality cichlid pellets. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; less territorial than rock-dwelling Victorian species. Compatibility: Large Victorian community; avoid mixing with highly territorial rock cichlids.
