Oryzias latipes
Also known as: Yukidanago Medaka, Snow Medaka, Snow Ricefish
Origin: Japan (cultivated variety)
The Yukidanago ('snow fish') is a Japanese medaka variety combining white body colouration with a faint blue iridescence that gives the fish a translucent, almost spectral quality. It is highly popular in the Japanese ornamental medaka hobby, where subtlety of colour and translucency are as valued as vivid colouration in western fishkeeping.
Water: 10–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.5; mild brackish tolerated; wide environmental tolerance. Tank: 20 L minimum; the translucent body is best appreciated over a light substrate with gentle lighting. Feeding: Micro pellets, quality flake, Daphnia, and frozen micro foods. Behaviour: Peaceful surface schooler; subtle and elegant behaviour suits serene planted tanks. Compatibility: All medaka varieties; small nano fish; peaceful invertebrates.
