Sander lucioperca
Origin: Europe
Sander lucioperca, the Zander, is a sleek, torpedo-shaped European predatory fish closely related to the perch, bearing faint dark bars on a silver-grey body and the striking, glassy reflective eyes characteristic of this nocturnal hunter. Small specimens are sold as display fish for large naturalistic pond setups where their predatory behaviour and striking eyes create genuine wildlife spectacle. A long-lived species requiring a very large dedicated pond for responsible keeping.
Requires a minimum 5,000 L dedicated predator pond — do not mix with any fish that can be swallowed. Feed live or fresh fish, large earthworms, and chunk seafood; zander rarely accept pelleted food without conditioning. Temperature 4–22°C; fully cold-hardy for Belgian/Dutch outdoor ponds. Provide deep water areas (1.5 m+) and overhangs for security. Hunting activity primarily at dusk and dawn. Check local regulations — restocking into natural waterways is regulated across Belgium.
