Dendrochirus zebra
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Dendrochirus zebra is a dwarf lionfish named for its striking alternating red-brown and white vertical zebra stripes, complemented by dramatically oversized, feathery pectoral fins that spread in a striking threat display. Among the most manageable lionfish for home aquariums, it suits smaller systems than the larger Pterois species and is both hardy and long-lived in captivity. Its venomous spines require careful handling, but it provides an unparalleled predator-fish display for intermediate marine keepers.
House in a minimum 200 L FOWLR or reef system; not reef safe with small crustaceans and shrimp but will generally leave corals undamaged. Feed frozen meaty foods including mysis, silversides, and shrimp — train off live food to prevent dietary fixation. Maintain temperature 23–27°C, SG 1.020–1.025. Handle only with protective gloves — spines are venomous and painful. Compatible with robust fish too large to be eaten.
