About

The Zebra Loach (Botia striata) is a strikingly patterned botiid loach from the Western Ghats and Deccan Plateau river systems of southern India. Its body is covered in alternating narrow black and cream-yellow vertical stripes — a classic zebra pattern — that runs across the entire flanks from gill to tail. The pattern makes it one of the most visually distinctive of all loach species.

Zebra Loaches are among the smaller Botia species, growing to about 8–10 cm, making them suitable for medium-sized aquariums. Like all Botia, they are social fish that must be kept in groups of 5 or more to feel secure and behave naturally. In groups, they engage in playful chasing behavior, squeeze together into tight hiding spots, and forage actively across the substrate.

They are effective snail hunters and will eagerly consume pest snails such as bladder snails and Malaysian trumpet snails. This makes them a valued addition to planted tanks dealing with snail infestations, provided they have adequate supplemental feeding from other food sources.

Zebra Loaches prefer water with moderate current and good oxygenation, reflecting their native Western Ghats stream habitat. They are generally peaceful but can be boisterous in small groups — maintain a group of 5 or more and provide adequate hiding spots to keep their social interactions positive.

Care Guide

Water Parameters: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 22–26°C, GH 5–15. Moderate flow and good oxygenation appreciated. Clean, stable water with regular water changes. Weekly 25–30% water changes maintain optimal conditions.

Tank Setup: Minimum 100 liters for a group of 5. Fine sand or smooth fine-gravel substrate for safety (loaches are sensitive to sharp substrate). Provide caves, hollow logs, driftwood, and hiding spots — they love to squeeze into tight spaces. Moderate filtration with some flow. Live plants tolerated.

Feeding: Omnivores accepting sinking pellets, sinking wafers, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and live snails. Feed sinking foods in the evening when most active. Avoid relying solely on snail hunting as their food source — direct supplemental feeding is necessary.

Tankmates: Peaceful and compatible with medium-sized community fish: tetras, barbs, gouramis, and other active species. Avoid very small, fragile fish that could be harassed. Keep in groups of 5+ to direct social energy within the group. Compatible with other Botia in large tanks.

Health: Hardy but sensitive to water quality degradation. Also sensitive to many medications — loaches lack scales and absorb chemicals more readily. Use loach-safe or half-dose treatments when medicating. Watch for ich, which spreads rapidly in groups.
