Neritina natalensis
Origin: East Africa, Southeast Asia
The Zebra Nerite Snail features unmistakably bold alternating black and gold zebra stripes that make it one of the most visually attractive algae-eating snails in the freshwater hobby. Like all nerites, it cannot complete its reproductive cycle in freshwater — larvae require brackish water to develop — which keeps populations naturally managed in closed aquarium systems. An extremely effective and popular cleaner for green spot algae, diatoms, and film algae on glass and hardscape.
Add 1–2 snails per 10 L of tank volume for effective algae control. Requires moderately hard water for healthy shell growth — avoid very soft water below GH 6. Temperature 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0. Supplement with algae wafers when natural algae is limited. Lay white rice-grain eggs on glass and hardscape surfaces in freshwater — these are harmless and will not hatch. Ensure a tight-fitting lid as nerites are agile climbers and will escape over the rim.
