Haplochromis obliquidens
Also known as: Zebra Obliquidens, Obliquidens Victorian Cichlid
Origin: Lake Victoria, Africa
Haplochromis obliquidens is one of the most widely kept and recognised Lake Victoria haplochromines in the aquarium hobby. Males develop attractive bold black vertical bars over a gold-orange body, somewhat reminiscent of some mbuna but with a distinctly Victorian character. It is one of the hardier Victorian cichlids and is recommended for keepers new to the Victorian cichlid group.
Water: 23-27°C, pH 7.2-8.5, moderately hard to hard water. Tank: 120L minimum; simple rock and sandy substrate setup. Feeding: Herbivore-leaning omnivore; algae-based foods with some protein supplement. Behaviour: Moderately aggressive; typical Victorian cichlid behaviour. Compatibility: Good with other Victorian cichlids; one of the easier species to mix.
