About

The Zebra Pleco (Hypancistrus zebra), designated L046, is without question one of the most famous and coveted fish in the entire freshwater aquarium hobby. Endemic to a narrow stretch of the Rio Xingu in the state of Pará, Brazil, it displays a striking pattern of bold, alternating black and white stripes that wrap uniformly around its compact body and fins, creating a visually dramatic appearance unlike any other catfish. The Zebra Pleco has been protected under CITES Appendix III by Brazil since 1990, prohibiting wild export, which means all specimens in the hobby today are captive-bred. This has made responsible breeding a significant and important activity within the fishkeeping community. In the wild, Zebra Plecos live in narrow, fast-flowing rocky chutes and rapids of the Rio Xingu, where water is very warm (often 28–30°C), highly oxygenated, soft to moderately hard, and moves at considerable velocity. These conditions must be faithfully replicated in captivity. Unlike herbivorous plecos, Zebra Plecos are primarily carnivorous and require protein-rich foods. They are secretive, largely nocturnal, and spend most of their time within caves and rocky crevices. Males are highly territorial and will fight with other males. Breeding in captivity, while achievable, requires precise conditions and dedication, placing this species firmly in the advanced category.

Care Guide

Tank Setup: A minimum of 100 liters is recommended, though a larger tank allows for more stable parameters and a better-established cave system. Provide multiple narrow caves sized to fit the fish snugly — PVC tubes, ceramic caves, and natural rock crevices all work well. Use fine sand or bare substrate. Powerheads must provide strong, directed flow across the tank floor.

Water Parameters: Target pH 6.0–7.5, GH 3–12, KH 1–6, and temperature 26–30°C. Temperatures below 26°C cause sluggishness and immune suppression. Oxygen levels must be very high — use vigorous surface agitation in addition to strong directional current. Maintain very low nitrates through 30–40% weekly water changes.

Filtration: Extremely powerful filtration is essential. Use a high-capacity canister filter plus one or more powerheads. The Rio Xingu is essentially pristine water with very low dissolved organics — this should be the aspiration in the aquarium.

Feeding: Primarily carnivorous. Offer frozen bloodworms, daphnia, mysis shrimp, Artemia, and high-quality carnivore sinking wafers as the core diet. Supplement minimally with vegetables. Feed in the evening or at night when the fish is active. Do not rely on algae wafers as a primary food source.

Social Behavior: Males are fiercely territorial toward each other. Keep one male per tank. Females can be kept together more peaceably. Completely peaceful toward fish occupying other areas of the tank.

Breeding: Requires very warm water, pristine quality, and correct cave structures. Males guard eggs for 5–7 days until hatching. Fry are miniature versions of the adults and relatively straightforward to raise on fine foods.
