Hypancistrus zebra
Origin: Rio Xingu, Brazil
Hypancistrus zebra, the Zebra Pleco (L046), is one of the most iconic and sought-after plecos in the hobby. Endemic to the Rio Xingu in Brazil, it displays stunning alternating black and white bands. A carnivore-leaning omnivore, unlike most plecos it does not eat much algae and prefers meaty foods. Slow-growing and cave-spawning. Due to Brazilian export restrictions most specimens are captive-bred in Europe. Thrives in warm, well-oxygenated water with strong flow mimicking its native habitat.
Temperature 28–32 °C is optimal. Strong flow, high O2. Caves and crevices for hiding and breeding. Feed sinking meaty pellets, frozen bloodworm, and occasional vegetable matter. Low nitrates essential. Peaceful; can share tank with other Hypancistrus or small schooling fish.
