Hypancistrus zebra
Origin: Rio Xingu, Brazil (captive-bred)
Hypancistrus zebra — the L046 zebra pleco — is the most iconic L-number plecostomus in the hobby. Its stark black-and-white striped pattern is unlike any other pleco. Wild export from Brazil was banned in 2004, so only captive-bred specimens should be purchased. It differs from most plecos in requiring a primarily carnivorous diet and does not significantly graze algae. It needs warm (28–30°C), clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water.
CAPTIVE-BRED ONLY. pH 6.0–7.5. Warm (28–30°C), high-flow. 100+ L. Feed: meaty foods — bloodworm, mysis, shrimp paste. NOT primarily herbivorous. Provide caves/hollow logs.
