Mastacembelus zebrinus
Origin: Myanmar
Mastacembelus zebrinus, the Zebra Spiny Eel, is a strikingly beautiful species from Myanmar featuring alternating light and dark vertical bands reminiscent of zebra stripes along its entire elongated body. One of the more manageable large spiny eels in terms of eventual size and temperament, it is a long-lived, increasingly popular species for large specialty aquariums where its unusual body shape and burrowing behaviour provide endless fascination. Requires a soft substrate into which it partially buries itself during the day.
Provide a minimum 250 L tank with a deep, soft sand substrate for burrowing. Furnish with driftwood, smooth stones, and dense planting for security. Feed primarily at night: frozen bloodworms, earthworms, small prawns, and sinking carnivore pellets. Maintain temperature 23–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5. Ensure a very secure, tight-fitting lid with no gaps — spiny eels are expert escape artists. Do not house with very small fish or invertebrates. Compatible with medium-large peaceful cichlids and large tetras.
