Flowerhorn hybrid (Cichlasomatinae)
Also known as: Zhen Zhu, ZZ Flowerhorn, Pearl Flowerhorn
Origin: Captive bred (hybrid)
The Zhen Zhu strain is one of the most widely kept Flowerhorn types and takes its name from the Chinese word for pearl, reflecting its most celebrated trait: dense, extensive pearl scaling that covers the body in shimmering iridescent dots. The kok is typically rounded and prominent, and the overall body shape is stocky and deep.
Zhen Zhu Flowerhorns tend to show more moderate temperament compared to some other strains and are generally considered an excellent starting point for keepers new to Flowerhorns. The strain's hardiness and attractive appearance at reasonable prices make it accessible to a wide range of aquarists.
Colour development continues throughout the fish's life and is heavily influenced by diet, water quality, and lighting conditions. Pearl scaling on a quality Zhen Zhu creates an almost three-dimensional appearance, with each scale reflecting light independently.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–18; consistent water quality enhances pearl lustre. Tank: Minimum 350L; keep alone; use smooth substrate to prevent injury; adequate lighting enhances pearl display. Feeding: Omnivore-leaning carnivore; Flowerhorn pellets, frozen foods, and vegetable-based colour foods. Breeding: Relatively easier to breed than Kamfa strains; pairs can be kept together after careful introduction. Compatibility: Solitary; keep alone; occasional success with large dither fish in very large tanks but not recommended.
