Rhinogobius zhoui
Also known as: Zhou's Rhinogobius Goby, Zhou's Stream Goby, Blue-spot Rhinogobius
Origin: Guangxi, China
Rhinogobius zhoui was described from the clear, swift streams of Guangxi province in southern China and is considered one of the most beautiful members of its genus. Males are adorned with brilliant red and orange pigmentation on the face and throat, multiple rows of cobalt-blue spots along the flanks, and intricately patterned fins. Females are more subdued but still attractive. This species inhabits shallow, oxygen-rich riffle zones over bedrock and cobble, and requires similar conditions in captivity. It is somewhat more demanding than R. duospilus, being more sensitive to warm temperatures and water quality deterioration. Regular partial water changes and attentive filtration are essential. Males will compete over territory with visible fin-flaring but rarely injure one another in a well-structured aquarium.
Water: 18–24 °C, pH 7.0–7.8, GH 5–15, KH 3–10; excellent filtration and oxygenation required; sensitive to ammonia spikes. Tank: 60 L minimum; pebble and flat stone substrate; strong directional flow; keep tank temperature below 24 °C year-round. Feeding: Carnivore; frozen bloodworm, cyclops, brine shrimp, and high-quality small pellets accepted. Breeding: Cave spawner under flat stones; eggs guarded by male; amphidromous larvae difficult to raise. Compatibility: Best in species tank or with upper-level schooling fish; territorial toward conspecific males.
