Macrognathus pancalus
Also known as: Zig-zag Spiny Eel, Spotted Spiny Eel
Origin: Southeast Asia
Macrognathus pancalus is widely distributed across South and Southeast Asian rivers and floodplains and is one of the most peaceful and manageable spiny eel species. Its attractive lateral stripe and small adult size make it suitable for a broader range of aquariums than its larger relatives. It should still be given a fine substrate for burrowing and a well-sealed lid.
Water: 22-28°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: Minimum 100L, fine sand substrate essential, dense planting, fully gapped lid. Feeding: Carnivore; live and frozen bloodworm, small Tubifex, micro-worm, daphnia. Behaviour: Shy and mostly nocturnal; non-aggressive toward fish larger than bite-size. Compatibility: Medium community fish; corydoras, medium tetras, peaceful barbs.
