Mastacembelus cf. pancalus
Also known as: Zig-Zag Yellow Tail Eel Small, Yellow-Tail Spiny Eel, Small Zigzag Spiny Eel
Origin: South Asia
This compact form of Mastacembelus cf. pancalus, traded as the yellow-tail zigzag eel, is characterised by a warm yellow to golden-orange colouration in the posterior body region that is particularly striking in juveniles. It is regularly available from South Asian exporters and is prized as one of the more colourful small spiny eels at accessible price points.
Its intermediate adult size of around 35 cm makes it practical for aquariums that cannot accommodate a fire eel or tire track eel, while its warm posterior colouration gives it a visual appeal that exceeds many of its plainer relatives. Care follows standard medium spiny eel requirements: soft sand, hiding spots, strong filtration, and a completely sealed lid.
Earthworms and bloodworm are accepted immediately; the yellow posterior colour is most intense in well-fed and well-maintained individuals on a varied diet. It is peaceful toward medium and larger tankmates and makes a rewarding beginner spiny eel for keepers who want something slightly more visually distinctive than the standard peacock eel.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 22–28°C, GH 3–15, KH 1–8. Tank: Minimum 120 L, fine sand, hiding spots, moderate lighting, sealed lid. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, bloodworm, tubifex, and quality sinking pellets. Breeding: Not documented; assumed egg-scatterer in warm soft conditions. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium community fish; avoid nano fish and invertebrates.
