Sicyopus zosterophorum
Origin: Philippines, Pacific islands
Sicyopus zosterophorum is a rare and colourful freshwater goby from the Philippines and Pacific island streams, where males display vivid banding and intense courtship colouration that makes them one of the most striking stream gobies available. Males are territorial and will skirmish with rivals, but this lively territorial behaviour adds character and entertainment value to a biotope-style display. A mature, high-flow, algae-rich aquarium best replicates their native cascading stream habitat.
Provide a minimum 80 L tank with strong flow, high oxygenation, smooth river stones, and a thin film of algae on rock surfaces (the primary food source). Feed on naturally growing algae supplemented with algae wafers, spinach paste, and nori. Temperature 22–26°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness. Keep males separated — one per tank or only one male with multiple females. Not suitable for soft blackwater setups. Advanced: requires stable, well-oxygenated, current-rich water.
