Acorus gramineus 'Ogon'
Also known as: Gold Sweetflag, Ogon Sweetflag, Golden Grassy-rush
Origin: Japan / China
Acorus gramineus 'Ogon' is a Japanese cultivar selected for its striking gold and green longitudinal variegation — each leaf carries alternating stripes of bright yellow-gold and mid-green. It is taller and more vigorous than 'Pusillus', reaching 15–25 cm, and is most effectively grown as a marginal or emergent plant in paludariums or open-top tanks. Like all Acorus it is intolerant of warm water and is best reserved for cool-water setups. The golden foliage catches light beautifully and provides vibrant colour year-round.
Light: Medium (25–45 PAR); sufficient light maintains golden variegation — low light may cause reversion toward green. CO2: Not required; low-tech marginal or partially submerged conditions are ideal. Planting: Plant the rhizome at or just above the substrate surface, ideally at the waterline in a paludarium. Maintenance: Remove all-green leaves promptly to prevent reversion overtaking the variegated form. Note: Restrict to cool water (15–22°C); warm tropical conditions cause rapid decline.
