Acorus gramineus 'Pusillus'
Also known as: Dwarf Sweetflag, Miniature Sweetflag, Tiny Grassy-rush
Origin: Japan / China
Acorus gramineus 'Pusillus' is a miniature cultivar of the Japanese Sweetflag, producing very short (5–10 cm), stiff, narrow leaves from a shallow creeping rhizome. It is technically a marginal or bog plant and is best grown with its rhizome at the waterline or with leaves above water in a paludarium, though it will tolerate full submersion for extended periods in cool water. Its dark-green, grass-like appearance provides clean, uncluttered texture in cool aquascape designs.
Light: Low to medium (15–40 PAR); genuinely shade-tolerant and suited to poorly lit areas. CO2: Not required; performs well in completely low-tech cool setups. Planting: Plant the rhizome horizontally just below or at the substrate surface; do not bury deeply. Maintenance: Very slow-growing — requires minimal trimming; simply remove dead leaves as they appear. Note: Performs best in cool water (15–22°C) and declines above 26°C; do not attempt in warm tropical tanks.
