Blyxa japonica
Also known as: Blyxa, Japanese Rush, Bamboo Plant
Origin: South-East Asia (Japan, China, India)

Blyxa japonica is a slender, emergent aquatic plant from rice paddies, ditches, and slow-moving streams across Asia, particularly common in Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. In the aquarium, it forms tufted rosettes of long, narrow, pale-green to olive-green leaves that have a characteristic fine-toothed margin and gentle translucency, creating a beautiful, feathery texture in the midground.
This plant is particularly popular in the Nature Aquarium style pioneered by Takashi Amano, who used it extensively to create natural, meadow-like aquascape compositions. Under ideal conditions — strong light, CO2 injection, and a rich substrate — Blyxa japonica takes on golden-yellow to reddish hues, adding warmth and variety to the planted layout.
Blyxa japonica is a fast grower under good conditions and benefits from regular trimming to maintain a compact, bushy appearance. If left untrimmed, the plant grows tall and can become leggy. It propagates by sending out runners that produce daughter plants at intervals.
This plant requires CO2 supplementation and good nutrient availability (both macro and micro) for optimal growth. Without CO2, it tends to grow slowly and may melt or fail to thrive. It is not a beginner plant but rewards experienced planted tank keepers with its elegant texture and color.
Light: High light requirement (50–100+ PAR). Strong lighting is essential for compact, healthy growth and color development.
CO2: CO2 injection is strongly recommended (20–30 mg/L). Without CO2, growth is minimal and the plant may decline.
Substrate: Rich aqua soil (ADA Amazonia, Tropica Soil) provides the nutrient base needed. Regular liquid fertilization of both macro and micro nutrients is important.
Placement: Midground. Forms rosette clusters that work well in groups of 3–5 for natural appearance. Plant individual stems or groups spaced 3–5 cm apart.
Maintenance: Trim outer leaves regularly to prevent the plant becoming too tall or leggy. Remove yellowing leaves. Runner daughter plants can be replanted to create denser groupings.
Water Parameters: pH 5.5–7.5, temperature 22–28°C, soft to moderately hard water (GH 4–15). Performs best in soft, slightly acidic water.
