Rotala macrandra 'Green'
Also known as: Green Rotala Macrandra, Giant Rotala Green
Origin: India

Rotala macrandra 'Green' is a striking, large-leaved stem plant cultivar of the commonly kept Rotala macrandra species, which naturally produces vivid pink-red leaves under strong light. The 'Green' variety has been selected for its retention of intense green coloration, producing lush, broad, rounded emerald-green leaves on upright stems — a beautiful contrast to the red-toned plants commonly seen in planted aquariums.
Native to India, where Rotala macrandra grows in shallow streams and marshes, this plant demands high light, CO2 injection, and a rich nutrient supply to grow well and maintain its vivid coloration. Under suboptimal conditions it becomes leggy, pale, or loses its leaves. Under ideal conditions, the large overlapping green leaves create a dense, textural background that is difficult to achieve with any other species.
Rotala macrandra 'Green' is best used in the background of aquascape compositions where its large leaves create depth and contrast with fine-textured foreground and midground plants. It grows upright and can reach the surface quickly — regular pruning every 1–2 weeks maintains a bushy, full appearance.
This cultivar is produced by ADA as part of their premium aquatic plant range, ensuring clean, tissue-culture quality for algae-free introduction to the aquarium.
Light: High light is required (60–100+ PAR). Insufficient light causes pale, sparse leaves and leggy growth.
CO2: CO2 injection (20–30 mg/L) is essential for healthy growth and vibrant green coloration.
Nutrients: Requires comprehensive macro (NPK) and micro (iron, trace elements) fertilization. Lean dosing results in pale or deficient plants. Use a complete liquid fertilizer regimen.
Placement: Background plant. Grows tall quickly — plant in groups of 5–7 stems at the back of the aquascape. Trim regularly (every 1–2 weeks) and replant tops for bushy, dense growth.
Maintenance: Regular pruning is necessary. Remove yellowing leaves from the base. Replant trimmed tops to fill gaps.
Water Parameters: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 22–28°C, soft to moderately hard water (GH 2–12). Prefers soft, slightly acidic conditions.
