Taxiphyllum sp. 'Flame'
Also known as: Flame Moss, Seiryu Flame Moss
Origin: South-East Asia

Seiryu Flame Moss (Taxiphyllum sp. 'Flame') is an attractive aquatic moss distinguishable by its upward-growing fronds that curve upward at the tips, creating a flame-like or tongue-like appearance quite different from the flat spread of Java Moss or the dense cushion of Christmas Moss. Under strong light with CO2, the fronds are a vivid, saturated green with a distinctive texture.
This moss grows in a compact, upright manner, making it ideal for attaching to rocks, driftwood branches, and hardscape where it creates a three-dimensional, sculptural effect. It is particularly effective when attached to ADA Seiryu Stone or similar angular rocks, where its upward flame-tips contrast elegantly with the angular geometry of the stone.
Like most aquatic mosses, Seiryu Flame Moss is versatile and relatively easy to care for. It tolerates a range of water conditions and does not require CO2 injection to survive, though CO2 and strong light produce much better growth, richer color, and denser frond development.
Propagation is simple — tear off clumps and attach to new surfaces with fishing line, mesh, or aquarium glue. The moss gradually adheres to porous surfaces over several weeks. ADA tissue culture versions provide a clean, contaminant-free start.
Light: Low to medium-high light (10–50+ PAR). Survives in low light but grows slowly; CO2 and high light produce dense, vivid growth.
CO2: Optional but beneficial. Produces much better results with CO2 injection (10–20 mg/L).
Attachment: Attach to rocks, driftwood, or hardscape using fishing line, dark thread, or aquatic glue. Fronds adhere naturally over 4–8 weeks. Trim regularly to maintain compact appearance.
Maintenance: Trim overgrowing sections to prevent the moss from becoming too dense and trapping detritus internally. Regular water changes prevent algae colonization of the moss.
Water Parameters: pH 5.5–8.0, temperature 15–28°C. Tolerant of a wide range of conditions. Prefers slightly acidic, cool to warm water.
Placement: Attached to midground rocks, driftwood branches, or stones. Works well as a standalone accent or covering an entire rock surface.
