Utricularia graminifolia
Also known as: UG, Utricularia, Grass Bladderwort
Origin: South-East Asia (India, Sri Lanka, China)

Utricularia graminifolia is a small carnivorous bladderwort species from South and Southeast Asia, where it grows in waterlogged, nutrient-poor soils and shallow pools. In the aquarium, it adapts as an aquatic plant, forming dense, vivid green carpets of thin, grass-like leaves that create one of the most natural-looking lawn effects possible in an aquascape.
In its role as a planted tank foreground species, Utricularia graminifolia is popular in Nature Aquarium and minimalist iwagumi compositions where it creates a meadow-like effect reminiscent of natural forest floor grasses. Unlike traditional grass carpets such as HC Cuba or Eleocharis parvula, it has a slightly different leaf texture and growth pattern that reads as more natural and less perfectly geometric.
The plant spreads by runners and gradually carpets the substrate. Under strong light and CO2, it is a relatively fast spreader, though it does require patience in the initial establishment phase. It is a demanding plant that needs high light, CO2, and nutrient-rich substrate — without these, it typically fails to carpet and may melt.
ADA produces Utricularia graminifolia as a tissue culture in their 'Wabi-Kusa Wall' and standard planted ranges, ensuring algae-free introduction.
Light: High light required (50–100+ PAR). Insufficient light causes the plant to fail to carpet and gradually die off.
CO2: CO2 injection (20–30 mg/L) is essential. This is one of the more CO2-demanding foreground plants.
Substrate: Rich aqua soil (ADA Amazonia or equivalent) provides the nutrient base needed for establishment. Poor substrate results in failure to root and spread.
Planting: Plant small portions 2–3 cm apart in the foreground substrate. Initial establishment takes 4–8 weeks before visible spreading begins. Be patient — the plant takes time to adapt before actively carpeting.
Maintenance: Trim as needed to maintain a short, dense carpet. Remove any floating portions that have detached. Regular fertilization prevents deficiencies in older established carpets.
Water Parameters: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 22–28°C, soft to moderately hard water (GH 2–12). Prefers soft, slightly acidic conditions.
