Anubias afzelii
Also known as: Afzel's Anubias, Afzelii Anubias
Origin: West Africa
Afzel's Anubias (Anubias afzelii) is named after Swedish botanist Adam Afzelius and is one of the taller, narrower-leafed Anubias species native to West Africa. Its long, strap-like, lanceolate leaves grow upright on long petioles, creating a graceful, vertical accent plant for the midground and background of aquariums. It is very rarely seen in the trade despite being a beautiful and fully hardy species.
Light: low light; adapts well to dimly lit positions. CO2: not required; liquid fertiliser supplementation maintains the deep green colour of the long leaves. Attachment: anchor rhizome to large driftwood or plant in open substrate with rhizome fully exposed. Trimming: remove individual old leaves at the petiole base; the tall habit requires no frequent trimming. Growth: very slow; propagate by dividing the rhizome.
