Alisma plantago-aquatica
Also known as: Water Plantain, Common Water Plantain
Origin: Europe, Asia, North America
Alisma plantago-aquatica, the Water Plantain, is native to Europe, Asia, and North America, where it grows in the margins of ponds, lakes, rivers, and drainage channels. Its submerged leaves are oval to lanceolate with a clear, prominent venation pattern and a fresh mid-green colour. In aquariums it produces an upright rosette of 20–40 cm, well suited to background planting in temperate, biotope, and unheated aquariums. It is a true cosmopolitan species, adapted to a very wide range of water chemistry.
A. plantago-aquatica is cold-tolerant and performs well in unheated temperate setups and cold-water biotopes housing species such as minnows, sticklebacks, or temperate loaches. It is among the hardiest aquatic rosette plants available, tolerating temperatures as low as 5–8°C in outdoor pond culture, though in aquariums it is most useful in the 10–22°C range.
Beyond the aquarium, the Water Plantain has a long history of use as a pond marginal and paludarium plant. Its combination of ease, adaptability, and attractive submerged leaf form makes it a valuable and underused tool for naturalistic cold-water and temperate aquarium projects.
Light: Low to medium (20–50 PAR); highly adaptable to a wide light range. CO2: Not required; grows without supplementation in both cold and warm water. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 4 months; low-dose liquid fertiliser every 2 weeks. Placement: Background in temperate or cold-water setups; plant singly or in small groups. Propagation: Produces daughter plants on short runners and from seed — sever runners once daughters are established.
