Alternanthera ficoidea
Origin: Tropical America
Alternanthera ficoidea is a vibrantly colourful stem plant native to tropical America with small, oval leaves exhibiting a rich mosaic of red, orange, and green tones that create a tapestry-like effect in planted aquascapes. Frequently used in Dutch-style aquarium layouts for its intense coloration, well-defined compact growth habit, and the warm colour contrast it provides against green background plants. Strong lighting and CO₂ supplementation are recommended to maintain its most vivid pigmentation.
Plant in nutrient-rich substrate under high-intensity lighting (40+ PAR). Inject CO₂ at 20–30 ppm for best colour saturation. Dose complete liquid macro and micro fertilizers regularly. Trim regularly to encourage compact, branching growth. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderate hardness) produces the best colour. Water temperature 22–28°C.
