Alternanthera rosaefolia
Origin: South America
Alternanthera rosaefolia is a widely cultivated ornamental aquatic plant known for its eye-catching rose-pink to magenta leaf coloration that brightens any aquascape with warm, vivid hues. The oval, medium-sized leaves are soft and slightly translucent, with coloration that deepens significantly under high-intensity lighting and adequate nutrient supply. It is a popular and reliable choice for Dutch aquascapes as a mid-ground colour block contrasting green background species.
Plant in nutrient-rich substrate under high-intensity lighting (40+ PAR). Inject CO₂ at 20–30 ppm for best colour saturation. Dose complete fertilizers regularly with emphasis on iron for red/pink pigmentation. Trim stem tops to encourage lateral growth and bushiness. Soft to moderately hard water at pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–28°C.
