Alternanthera sp. 'True Red'
Origin: Cultivar (origin unknown)
Alternanthera sp. 'True Red' is a cultivar specifically selected for its unrivalled, fully saturated deep crimson coloration on both leaf surfaces — free of the orange or pink undertones common in other red Alternanthera species. It is considered one of the most intensely pigmented aquatic stem plants available in the hobby and a statement centrepiece for high-tech Dutch-style and nature aquarium layouts. Demanding of strong light, consistent CO₂, and a fully balanced macro and micro nutrient regimen to sustain its deep, pure red colour without any colour fade.
Plant in nutrient-rich substrate under very high-intensity lighting (50+ PAR). CO₂ injection at 25–35 ppm is required. Dose complete fertilizers with particular emphasis on iron, potassium, and phosphate. Trim regularly to maintain compact form and stimulate lateral branching. Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0) and temperature 22–27°C produce the most vivid red. Slow growth is normal for this cultivar.
