Limnobium laevigatum
Origin: South America
Amazon Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum) is a fast-growing South American floating plant with attractive round, spongy leaves that sit on the water surface and long, feathery white roots that dangle into the water below, providing excellent refuge for fry, small invertebrates, and surface-dwelling species. Its rapid growth rate makes it one of the most effective floating plants for absorbing excess nutrients, reducing algae through nutrient competition, and providing natural surface shading and cover in planted aquariums and ponds.
Float directly on the water surface in a freshwater aquarium or pond. Provide medium to high lighting for fastest growth. Thin regularly as growth is rapid — remove approximately 30–50% of coverage weekly in high-light setups to maintain open swimming areas. Sensitive to strong surface agitation — position away from powerful spray bars. Remove excess plants to prevent total surface coverage that blocks light from submerged plants. pH 6.0–8.0, temperature 18–28°C.
