Amazon Sword Echinodorus bleheri pot

The Amazon Sword (Echinodorus bleheri) is arguably the most iconic and widely kept aquarium plant in the hobby, producing large, bold lance-shaped bright green leaves that create an impressive centrepiece in any aquarium. It is exceptionally hardy and tolerates a very wide range of conditions — low light, hard water, wide pH range — making it the go-to recommendation for beginners across Belgium and the Netherlands. Regular feeding with root tabs in the substrate encourages vigorous, lush growth and healthy leaf production.

Plant in a nutrient-rich substrate or supplement with root tabs every 3 months. Provide medium lighting — this plant adapts to low light but grows more vigorously under medium to high illumination. No CO₂ required. Tolerates pH 6.0–8.5 and a wide range of hardness. Place in the background or midground of larger aquariums. Remove older yellowing leaves regularly. Allow sufficient root space — Echinodorus root systems are extensive.
