Ammannia gracilis
Also known as: Red Ammannia, Slender Ammannia
Origin: West Africa
Ammannia gracilis is native to West Africa and has been cultivated in aquariums for several decades. Its narrow, lance-shaped leaves are initially olive-green near the substrate base and progressively deepen to orange and red toward the light-exposed growing tips. It requires good light and CO2 for best colour development and benefits from iron-rich fertilisation. Its moderate growth rate and distinctive colour range from yellow-green to orange-red make it a versatile accent plant in Dutch and Nature Aquarium layouts.
Light: High (60–90 PAR); orange-red colouration dependent on high light intensity. CO2: Required at 20–30 mg/L; without CO2 tips remain green and growth slows. Fertiliser: High iron and comprehensive micronutrients; dose frequently to sustain colour. Planting: Background groups of 5–7 stems spaced 2–3 cm; trim every 2 weeks. Growth: Moderate; 20–40 cm; new tips show best orange-red colouration.
