Ammannia senegalensis
Origin: Senegal, West Africa
Ammannia senegalensis is a beautiful reddish-orange stem plant native to Senegal and other parts of West Africa, with slightly broader leaves than other Ammannia species that create a more substantial visual presence in the aquarium. Under strong light and CO₂ injection, the leaves develop a vivid copper-orange to deep red hue that creates dramatic colour contrast in planted aquascapes. Requires consistent and comprehensive nutrient dosing to maintain its rich coloration over the long term.
Plant in nutrient-rich substrate under high-intensity lighting (40+ PAR). Inject CO₂ at 20–30 ppm. Dose complete liquid fertilizers regularly with adequate iron, potassium, and phosphate for best colour. Trim regularly to encourage branching. Soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5) at 22–28°C. More forgiving than A. praetermissa and a good intermediate step for aquascapers developing their red stem plant skills.
