Ammannia senegalensis
Also known as: Senegal Ammannia, Copper Ammannia
Origin: West Africa
Ammannia senegalensis is a larger and more boldly coloured species than A. gracilis, with broader, more oval leaves that develop an intense copper to deep reddish-brown colouration under optimal conditions. Native to West Africa, it requires nutrient-rich water, high light, and CO2 injection to reach its full colour potential. It is a statement plant that commands attention in the background and works particularly well as a colour focal point in Dutch-style aquascapes where its warm tones contrast with green and yellow plants.
Light: High (70–100 PAR); deep red-copper colour only achieved under strong lighting. CO2: Required at 25–35 mg/L; critical for both colour and compact internode growth. Fertiliser: Very high iron and micronutrients; comprehensive daily dosing recommended. Planting: Background groups of 3–5 stems spaced 3 cm; trim every 2 weeks. Growth: Moderate; 20–50 cm; broad leaves create visual impact with fewer stems.
