Anubias barteri var. nana
Origin: West Africa
Anubias barteri var. nana is one of the most popular aquarium plants worldwide, universally prized for its small, deep green, oval to heart-shaped leaves and extraordinary durability under virtually any aquarium condition. It grows slowly as an epiphyte on driftwood or rock and is virtually indestructible — tolerating low light, hard water, wide pH ranges, and even the attentions of herbivorous fish. The number one recommendation for beginners and the most widely stocked plant across Belgium and the Netherlands.
Attach the rhizome to driftwood or rockwork — do not bury in substrate. Low to medium lighting is ideal. No CO₂ required. Dose liquid fertilizer to the water column for best growth rate (which remains slow). Trim older damaged leaves as needed. Algae on Anubias leaves is a common issue in low-flow, low-light setups — increase water movement across leaf surfaces. Almost impossible to kill — the perfect first plant for any aquarist.
