Anubias barteri var. nana 'Gold'
Also known as: Gold Anubias, Golden Nana Anubias
Origin: Cultivar (originally West Africa)
Anubias barteri var. nana 'Gold' is a selected cultivar characterised by its consistently warm golden-yellow to bright yellow-green leaf colouration, especially vivid in newly emerging leaves. Unlike the 'White' cultivar whose leaves turn green with age, 'Gold' tends to maintain a warm lime-green to golden hue on mature leaves as well, making the entire plant appear to glow under aquarium lighting.
It thrives under the same broad conditions as standard Anubias nana, tolerating low light but producing its most vibrant golden colouration under moderate illumination. The rhizome is attached to hardscape and must never be buried. It pairs beautifully with darker-toned plants and dark volcanic rock, where its warm glow creates maximum contrast.
The plant is fully suitable for beginners and community aquariums, being completely non-toxic and ignored by most fish. Nerite snails serve double duty as algae cleaners on the slow-growing leaves.
Light: medium light best for vivid golden colouration; low light is tolerated but leaves turn more lime-green. CO2: not required; growth proceeds without CO2 supplementation. Fertilisation: iron-rich liquid fertiliser encourages the warm golden-yellow tones; dose every 2–4 weeks. Placement: attach to foreground or midground hardscape; golden leaves stand out best against dark rocks or black substrate. Propagation: divide rhizome into sections retaining 2–3 leaves; golden colouration is retained in divisions.
