Anubias barteri var. nana 'White'
Also known as: White Anubias, Variegated Anubias Nana
Origin: Cultivar (originally West Africa)
Anubias barteri var. nana 'White' is a variegated cultivar whose new leaves emerge almost entirely white or cream, creating a dramatic contrast against the darker mature green leaves on the same plant. This natural variegation is caused by reduced chlorophyll in juvenile tissue and is a stable trait in well-maintained plants. The shifting palette from white through yellow-green to deep green as leaves mature means the plant always displays multiple colours simultaneously.
Care requirements are essentially identical to standard Anubias nana, though this cultivar benefits from slightly higher light levels to encourage the development of vibrant white new growth. At very low light the new leaves may emerge more green than white. Like all Anubias it must be attached to hardscape with the rhizome fully exposed.
The contrasting leaf colours make this cultivar an exceptional focal point in minimalist aquascapes, particularly against dark substrates or volcanic rock. It is best complemented by fine mosses or small ferns that do not compete visually with its distinctive colouration.
Light: low to medium light; slightly elevated light intensity encourages whiter new leaf emergence. CO2: not required; optional CO2 supports healthier growth without dramatically changing variegation. Fertilisation: regular liquid fertiliser dosing with micronutrients and iron helps sustain vivid leaf colours through leaf maturation. Placement: foreground or midground on pale or dark hardscape where the white leaves contrast dramatically. Propagation: divide rhizome carefully, retaining at least 2–3 leaves per section; the variegation trait is retained through division.
