Anubias barteri var. nana 'Wrinkled'
Also known as: Wrinkled Anubias, Puckered Nana Anubias
Origin: Cultivar (originally West Africa)
Anubias barteri var. nana 'Wrinkled' is distinguished from standard nana by the deeply puckered, bullate surface of its leaves — a consistent genetic trait that makes each leaf appear as though it has been gently crumpled and released. This texture dramatically increases the visual complexity of the plant, catching light and shadow in ways that smooth-leafed Anubias cannot replicate.
The wrinkled texture is best appreciated under directional overhead lighting which casts shadows in the leaf depressions, emphasising the three-dimensional quality of the foliage. It combines well with smooth-leafed Bucephalandra or flat-surfaced mosses, where the textural contrast adds depth to the overall composition.
Care requirements are identical to standard Anubias nana — it is equally tolerant of low light, soft or hard water, and infrequent fertilisation. The rhizome must always remain exposed and attached to hardscape rather than buried in substrate.
Light: low to medium; directional overhead light best showcases the three-dimensional wrinkled leaf texture. CO2: not required; optional CO2 supplementation provides a modest growth improvement. Fertilisation: periodic liquid fertiliser application maintains the deep-green colour of the wrinkled leaves. Placement: midground on textured rocks or rough-barked driftwood to complement the leaf surface; rhizome must stay exposed. Propagation: divide rhizome into 2–3 leaf sections with a clean blade; wrinkled leaf trait is inherited by all divisions.
