Anubias congensis
Also known as: Congo Anubias, Congensis Anubias
Origin: Congo Region, Central Africa
Anubias congensis is a sturdy and adaptable species from the Congo region, producing broad, lance-shaped leaves in deep, uniform green on thick petioles from a robust rhizome. It falls between the small nana varieties and the truly giant species in terms of size, making it a practical choice for a wide range of aquarium sizes. It is exceptionally tolerant of poor water quality, low light, and minimal fertilisation — making it one of the most reliable plants available to the beginner and advanced aquarist alike. Its thick, leathery leaves resist herbivory and physical damage, and it grows at a slow, steady pace that keeps maintenance minimal.
Light: Low to moderate; one of the most low-light tolerant aquarium plants available. CO2: Not required; no CO2 supplementation needed for healthy growth. Fertilisation: Light to moderate; tolerates nutrient-poor conditions but grows better with fertilisation. Placement: Midground to background; versatile — attach to hardscape or plant in substrate. Propagation: Rhizome division; clean cuts between healthy nodes produce viable new plants.
