Anubias heterophylla
Also known as: Variable-leaf Anubias, Congo Anubias
Origin: Central Africa (Congo Basin)
Anubias heterophylla is a large and structurally remarkable species from Central Africa, noted for the extraordinary variability of its leaf shape — which can range from elongated lanceolate to broadly arrow-shaped even on the same plant. Leaves are deep, glossy green and can grow to considerable size, producing a bold architectural presence. The plant is robust and adaptable, tolerating the same low-light, low-maintenance conditions characteristic of the genus. It is best suited to larger aquariums where its variable leaf forms can be fully appreciated. Attaching it to driftwood or rock showcases its dramatic growth pattern most effectively.
Light: Low to moderate; shade-tolerant; performs well under minimal illumination. CO2: Not required; grows without CO2 supplementation across a wide range of conditions. Fertilisation: Light to moderate feeding via liquid fertiliser; minimal root feeding needed. Placement: Midground to background on driftwood or rocks in large aquariums. Propagation: Rhizome division; cut between healthy nodes and attach new sections.
