Anubias barteri var. nana 'Petite'
Also known as: Anubias Petite, mini Anubias, nano Anubias
Origin: West Africa (cultivar developed in aquaculture)

Anubias barteri var. nana 'Petite' is the most compact of the commonly available Anubias cultivars, featuring miniature versions of the typical Anubias nana leaf — dark, glossy, rounded leaves on a slow-growing rhizome, but scaled down to approximately 1–2 cm per leaf. This extremely small leaf size makes it uniquely suitable for nano aquariums, foreground attachment, and creating the illusion of scale in aquascape compositions where large-leaved plants would be inappropriate.
Like all Anubias, 'Petite' is a rhizome plant native to tropical West Africa, where it grows on shaded, wet rocks and submerged wood in streams and rivers. Its care requirements are identical to standard Anubias nana: attach to hardscape (never bury the rhizome), provide low to moderate indirect light, and fertilize lightly. It is one of the most beginner-friendly and low-maintenance aquarium plants available.
The extremely slow growth of 'Petite' (even slower than standard Anubias nana) means algae on the leaf surface is a potential concern in high-light, high-nutrient setups. It is best placed in lower-light positions or dappled shade from overhead planting.
Anubias 'Petite' is particularly effective when attached in small clusters to fine driftwood branches or small stones, where its tiny leaves create intricate detail and texture in an aquascape.
Light: Low to medium light (5–25 PAR). Very tolerant of low light — one of the best plants for shaded or low-tech aquariums. Strong direct light promotes algae on the leaf surface due to the slow growth rate.
CO2: Not required. Grows in low-tech setups without CO2 supplementation.
Attachment: Attach rhizome to driftwood or rocks with fishing line, thread, or aquatic glue. DO NOT bury the rhizome. The plant grows very slowly but adheres securely over time.
Fertilization: Light liquid fertilization (micro and macro nutrients) is beneficial. Not demanding. Avoid overloading nutrients that promote algae on leaves.
Placement: Foreground or midground. Ideal for nano tanks, attached to small stones or fine driftwood branches.
Maintenance: Minimal. Remove yellow leaves. Very slow growth means the aquascape impact lasts many months without significant changes.
Water Parameters: pH 6.0–8.0, temperature 22–28°C. Extremely adaptable.
