Anubias pynaertii
Also known as: Pynaert's Anubias, Broad Congo Anubias
Origin: Congo Basin, Central Africa
Anubias pynaertii is a lesser-known and rarely cultivated species from the Congo Basin, valued by specialist collectors for its large, broadly heart-shaped leaves and commanding physical presence. The leaves are deep green, moderately glossy, and carried on long, firm petioles from a thick, spreading rhizome that advances steadily over hardscape. It shares the extreme hardiness and longevity of the Anubias genus and tolerates the full range of conditions that other species endure. Its size — considerably larger than many Anubias — requires adequate aquarium space. A spectacular and unusual species for aquarists seeking to go beyond the standard Anubias range.
Light: Low to moderate; remarkable shade tolerance — avoid intense direct light. CO2: Not required; thrives without CO2 across a broad range of setups. Fertilisation: Moderate liquid fertilisation; robust plant tolerates lean conditions. Placement: Background or centerpiece on large driftwood or rock formations. Propagation: Rhizome division when the rhizome is long enough; each section needs 2+ leaves.
