Aponogeton crispus
Also known as: Crinkled-leaf Aponogeton, Ruffled Aponogeton
Origin: Asia
Aponogeton crispus is native to Sri Lanka and is arguably the most beginner-friendly Aponogeton species, renowned for growing vigorously from a dormant corm even under low light and without CO2. Its bright-green, lance-shaped leaves have attractively wavy or crisped margins and can reach 40 cm in tall tanks. It flowers readily in the aquarium, producing a forked inflorescence above the water surface. After blooming it may rest before producing a new flush of growth — a normal and healthy dormancy cycle that should be respected.
Light: Low to medium (15–40 PAR); one of the few aquarium plants that genuinely thrives under minimal light. CO2: Not required; performs excellently in low-tech tanks. Fertiliser: Root tab placed under or next to the corm; occasional liquid fertiliser. Planting: Plant corm just below the substrate; allow space for large leaf spread; midground to background. Growth: Fast initial growth; reaches 20–40 cm; rests periodically — allow dormancy by reducing light or temperature briefly.
