Aponogeton crispus
Also known as: White Flower Crispus, Flowering Aponogeton
Origin: Sri Lanka
Aponogeton crispus is notable among aquarium plants for its willingness to flower in captivity, and this White Flower strain has been selected for particularly prolific and reliable bloom production. The flower spikes emerge on long peduncles above the water surface, bearing two parallel rows of small white flowers with a delicate, sweet fragrance that can perfume the surrounding air of a room.
Aside from its flowering performance, care is identical to standard A. crispus: it is an easy, fast-growing species tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, requiring no CO2 and growing well under medium light with periodic root fertilisation. The green-leaved White Flower strain is particularly vigorous and well established in the hobby.
For aquarists who enjoy the full biology of their plants — including the above-water dimension of flowering, pollination, and seed-setting — A. crispus White Flower is the ideal Aponogeton. Seeds can be collected and germinated in shallow trays of water, providing a straightforward propagation project.
Light: Medium; consistent light quality and photoperiod encourage repeat flowering throughout the year. CO2: Not required; the White Flower strain performs excellently in low-tech community aquarium setups. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 8 weeks; balanced liquid fertiliser weekly during active growth supports flower production. Placement: Background with open water surface above for flower spikes to emerge unobstructed. Propagation: Collect ripe seed from flowers and sow on damp substrate in a shallow tray; germination in 1–2 weeks.
