Aponogeton distachyos
Also known as: Cape Pondweed Bulb Pack, Water Hawthorn Bulb, Cape Water Hawthorn
Origin: South Africa
This bulb pack of Aponogeton distachyos — Cape Pondweed or Water Hawthorn — is one of the best-value aquatic bulb purchases for pond owners and cool-water aquarium enthusiasts. Each bulb is a dormant, frost-hardy corm that can be planted directly into the substrate of an outdoor pond or cool aquarium in early autumn or spring, when water temperatures drop below 20 °C and the plant's growing season begins.
A. distachyos is the world's most widely cultivated Aponogeton species in outdoor water gardening, prized for its striking two-pronged white flowers with black anthers and their remarkable vanilla fragrance, which can be detected from some distance. The floating leaves provide surface coverage and habitat for invertebrates and fish fry.
This bulb pack is ideal for establishing new ponds or water features in autumn, as the timing coincides perfectly with the species' natural growing season. Each bulb is inspected for viability and dispatched with brief planting instructions.
Light: Medium; natural outdoor light is ideal; plant in positions receiving at least 4 hours of direct sun daily. CO2: Not required; fully self-sufficient in outdoor pond conditions. Fertilisation: Slow-release aquatic fertiliser tablet placed beside each bulb at planting. Placement: Pond substrate at 20–40 cm depth; or in aquarium background with open surface for floating leaves. Propagation: Seed from flowers germinates freely at the water surface; also produces abundant offset bulbs.
