Aponogeton distachyos
Also known as: Cape Pondweed, Water Hawthorn, Cape Water Hawthorn
Origin: South Africa
Aponogeton distachyos — the Cape Pondweed or Water Hawthorn — is the most widely cultivated Aponogeton species outside specialist aquarium circles, grown globally in garden ponds and ornamental water features. Native to the Western Cape of South Africa, it bears oval, floating leaves on long petioles and produces forked white floral spathes with distinctive black or chocolate-brown anthers and a powerful vanilla-like fragrance, blooming in autumn and spring.
Its frost hardiness to approximately −10 °C makes it suitable for outdoor ponds in much of northern Europe, the United Kingdom, and North America, where it can be left in place year-round in all but the coldest climates. In warmer climates it typically becomes dormant during the hot summer months and resumes growth in autumn.
In aquariums, A. distachyos requires an open water surface for its floating leaves and flowers, and performs best in cool or temperate conditions. It is undemanding regarding water chemistry and substrate composition, establishing readily in a wide range of conditions.
Light: Medium; natural outdoor light is ideal; in aquariums, broad-spectrum light for 10–12 hours daily. CO2: Not required; fully hardy and vigorous without any supplementation. Fertilisation: Slow-release aquatic fertiliser tablets placed beside the bulb at planting; refresh every spring. Placement: Open-top pond or aquarium background; floating leaves require unrestricted surface access. Propagation: Prolific seeding from flowers; offsets produced from bulb base; self-naturalises readily in outdoor ponds.
