Aponogeton elongatus
Also known as: Elongated Aponogeton, Queensland Aponogeton
Origin: Australia
Aponogeton elongatus is native to the rivers of Queensland, Australia, making it a rare Australasian aquarium plant. It grows from a starchy corm, sending up long, narrow, slightly undulating leaves in pale to medium green. It is an adaptable species tolerating both warm tropical and cooler subtropical temperatures, growing vigorously in medium-light conditions without CO2 supplementation. It will flower in the aquarium, producing a single-branched spike above the water surface. Like most Aponogetons it benefits from periodic dormancy to maintain long-term vigour.
Light: Medium (30–50 PAR); grows well under standard aquarium lighting. CO2: Not required; performs comfortably without injection. Fertiliser: Root tab under or beside the corm; liquid fertiliser monthly. Planting: Plant corm just below the substrate in the background; allow substantial space for leaf arching. Growth: Moderate; reaches 30–50 cm; a periodic short dormancy supports healthy long-term growth.
