Aponogeton elongatus
Also known as: Australian Aponogeton, Elongate Aponogeton
Origin: Australia
Aponogeton elongatus is Australia's most widespread native Aponogeton species, found in the billabongs, rivers, and seasonal pools of Queensland and the Northern Territory. It produces long, bright-green, moderately undulate leaves reaching 30–60 cm in a spreading rosette, and is notable for being one of the easiest Aponogeton species to cultivate — tolerating a wide range of water conditions, growing quickly, and requiring no CO2.
This bulb pack format provides dormant corms that are ready to plant directly into a nutrient-rich aquarium substrate. Each bulb is individually inspected for viability. Under warm tropical conditions the first leaves typically emerge within 1–2 weeks, and the plant grows quickly to produce an impressive rosette within a few months.
For aquarists who want the elegance and botanical interest of an Aponogeton without the challenging demands of Malagasy species, A. elongatus Bulb Pack is the ideal choice. It also works beautifully in Australian biotope aquariums featuring rainbowfish, gudgeons, and other native species.
Light: Medium; grows under a wide range of lighting conditions, including modest community tank setups. CO2: Not required; one of the most unfussy Aponogeton species regarding water chemistry and CO2. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 8–10 weeks; tolerates lean substrates but grows faster with good nutrients. Placement: Background in aquariums from 100 litres; plant bulbs 20 cm apart with tips just above substrate. Propagation: Prolific flowering and offset bulb production; bulbs can also be purchased as dry corms and stored.
