Aponogeton henkelianus
Also known as: Henkel's Aponogeton, South African Aponogeton
Origin: South Africa
Aponogeton henkelianus is native to the seasonal waterbodies of South Africa and is one of the more adaptable species in the genus. It produces broad, ovate to lance-shaped leaves with a moderate undulate margin in a rich, deep green, and can achieve impressive size under good conditions, with leaves reaching 40–60 cm or more in large aquariums.
Its care requirements are comparatively relaxed: it tolerates a range of water hardness, pH, and temperature, including cooler water suitable for temperate aquariums. It enters a seasonal dormancy, particularly under cool or low-light conditions, but re-emerges reliably from the bulb once conditions improve. A moderate nutrient supply is appreciated but it will persist in lean substrates with periodic root supplementation.
This species is an excellent gateway Aponogeton for beginners — large enough to make a visual impact, undemanding enough to grow successfully in a community aquarium, and interesting enough to reward the collector who wants a genuine botanical conversation piece.
Light: Medium; tolerates lower light than most Aponogeton without immediate dormancy, making it suitable for community tanks. CO2: Not required; grows well without supplementation under standard community aquarium conditions. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 8–10 weeks; liquid fertiliser once weekly will accelerate leaf production during active growth. Placement: Background or as a centrepiece in a medium tank; allow a 25 cm radius of open substrate around the bulb. Propagation: Produces offset bulbs prolifically after flowering; collect when 2–3 cm and replant in a nutrient-rich spot.
